So a blog is supposed to be written more regularly - I know! I just can't effectively combine walk, work, motherhood and being creative. I'm a failure and I accept it. However, I'm managing to be more or less on track for this weekend's marathon. Most of the details are organised. It all just has to go according to plan now........I do hope I'll be over my cold by the weekend though. I've preferred not to train too much over the last few days, so that I can recover and not be too exhausted on Saturday. That's the theory, anyway. I also hope I'll get a bit more sleep! I'm either over-excited or anxious about the travelling. I get a bit paranoid about missing flights, trains, etc. You'd think I'd be used to it by now. Still, at least my insomnia has enabled me to update my blog...... The bra needs to be finished tomorrow. It's a work of art! I just hope we can do it justice...... here's a sneak preview.
There'll be bling too! Please feel free to sponsor me and my team-mates in 'Dancing Queens'. We'll be doing our best for breast cancer research on Saturday night. See you Monday with the photos! xxxx J
Rdv ici, lundi soir. xxxxx J
So that's the final "big" walk under my belt. Sis and I completed 27 km in the sweltering heat and our Walk the Walk tee-shirts (which attracted a fair bit of attention!). We made our customary stop at Friend's house, for tea and straight- out -of -the -oven flapjacks, which were very morale-boosting. We considered a detour via the nearest neighbour's house, where a fundraising Open Garden weekend was being held and some lovely African fans were on sale. However, we were already a little behind schedule at that point and didn't want to prolong things too much... I'd been the day before to have a look at the beautiful garden and make a contribution to "Les Enfants de Bamako". The organiser had made some lovely bags and lavender pouches and her daughters had printed up some beautiful cards ......so I couldn't resist!
Some great live music was also provided, much appreciated by the children....
and much fun was had with the garden toys....
All rounded off with a very tasty picnic.
So, very little time to recover from the weekend's exertions and back into a week of running between schools and getting to grips with the French love of admin, coupled with a very cumbersome Education structure of organisations that don't actually speak to each other, even though they all do essentially the same thing. Welcome to modern France. And it's exam time.........and there's a concert to prepare for Friday. Not too much in the way of side effects from the walking. We dosed ourselves up with Arnica granules and liberally applied Arnica massage oil, which seemed to do the trick. Now we have to make sure we can get it onto the plane with us to Edinburgh......tickets are booked, hotel organised, clothes sorted! Just a bit more sponsorship needed.......and maybe a little more training!
Fort heureusement.
Having managed a quick 5km last night, I was determined to keep up the momentum today and set off relatively early (not the 7 o'clock start I had imagined) to do and 11 - 12km walk. There's been a lot of talk about dogs recently and I have neighbours who won't walk around here, so I decided to take a stick with me. Despite the stick, I was thwarted as I tried to leave the village and came across the big black dog that we suspect to be Romeo's attacker prancing around in the middle of the road. Needless to say, I found a detour, which probably added another km. A friend frightened the living daylights out of me by popping up from behind her hedge to say hello as I walked past - apart from anything else, I hadn't banked on speaking to anybody and wasn't at my best. I did have me suncream on, though, which is probably why the sun went in.
They had obviously seen the weather forecast.
This was a solitary walk, and whilst I enjoy the time to think, plan lessons, etc. I really prefer walking and talking. It goes much faster.....I'm hoping to hijack Tall Son for tomorrow. My other walking companions are either absent or injured. I'm looking forward to accompanying my sister for our one "really long walk" before the final event. Should be in about two weeks' time. There's a nice climb to today's circuit, which I've done about 4 times now (once in heavy snow). It's gentle enough for me to be slightly flushed and not puce as I reach the top.
I had a couple more run-ins with dogs before the end. I watched an Alsation run towards me, hoping that the chain I could see was actually attached to something other than the dog....it was. But my heart took a while to settle. Another one I have encountered before, but he gets closer each time and he has one of those very wide jaws. His extremely elderly owner isn't much protection for me either, so I don't think I'll be taking that route again. It's not all wild dogs, though...
...from pot-bellied pigs to a magnificent white horse (who was very keen to chat, incidentally). Tomorrow's is a long one!
After an emotional up and downer yesterday, we got what we needed on Friday (another Bank Holiday!) and had some quiet family time to chill out. Romeo is doing remarkably well considering his crushed rib cage and punctured lung. The clouds had gathered this morning, so walking wasn't the preferred option and I spent the time cooking - waffles for breakfast, fig and molasses cake slices (good for the brain, apparently) and preparing the dried fruit for a gluten free cake. It's amazing how much time I can spend in the kitchen........
Some fig and molasses slices, with some more wonderful muguet which has come my way.
After lunch we headed over to see some friends and helped out for a short while in their vegetable patch.. these strawberries needed help to see the light of day...... .......this is Tall Son, very happy to be doing something practical and physical... Then the little peeps decided they wanted to be inside and playing with their toys, so in we went for Peppa Pig stories and Fifi and the Flower Tots rôle play. When it all got too much and tantrums started I took Small Son with me and left Tall Son to help with some painting in the new gîte. Small Son was not at all happy at leaving his big brother behind and it took a fair bit of work to distract him. As luck would have it, we had to pull off the road to let some cows past and I asked him what they were doing. "They're dancing," he said. So in this neighbourhood we have the great privilege of having cows that dance their way to milking.
Here's the last of the lilac, which my neighbour brought me from her garden. It smells fantastic, but doesn't last long unfortunately. Not much happening on the walking front at the moment, but I have to do at least 18km at the end of the week, so I'd better get moving......... The weather's lovely and there are so many things to do.....and I'm not working this week! What I'm going to do when I start work next week, heaven only knows. For the time being, I'm trying to be healthy and eliminate the bad things from my diet and eat and drink well. Hence the green tea in my lovely pot for one which my sister gave me for my birthday.
...and my lily of the valley has come into flower.....
The nightingale has started singing, so I'm off to bed to listen to it. Let's hope Small Son lets us sleep the night through. Tomorrow, I walk!
des All Star Converses.
On a rencontré
verres ensemble .
So today's 1st May, La Fête du Travail - which is ironic really, as it's a bank holiday. This is a historic May Day, though, as it's the first time in many years that all the different unions will be demonstrating together. Well done Sarko - a united France. I'm neither resting nor demonstrating today, I'm at the village Vide-Grenier. This is the equivalent of a car-boot sale, only the French refer to the activity of emptying your attic to get the things to sell, whereas the British focus on the place of sale. In France you take it one stage further and remove everything from your boot and put it on a table. Or a mat.
We were lucky with the weather and after the early morning fog swirling round us, it settled into a sunny, if rather breezy, day. We're now into the season for Vide-Greniers so there's at least one every weekend, usually more. I suspect there were others today, as we didn't see a lot of customers. I resisted the temptation to spend more than I earned (unlike one I did at Christmas!) and didn't do too badly. Tall Son got a great deal on an electric guitar and amplifier, plus a pair of All Star Converse shoes. All good for the High School Musical/Camp Rock/Hannah Montana thing he's got going at the moment. Small Son got a small, but real, guitar for €1.50 and I got the coffee spoons and pastry forks I've been looking for - all for only €3. Bargains! I narrowly missed out on the Laguiole cheese service - but it went to a friend, so I didn't make too much of a fuss........she did help me set up my stall, after all!
Only a brief walk today - but an energetic one, as it involved a pram and an excited child wanting it pushed at maximum speed. We encountered the usual suspects and admired the flowers. Small Son was most impressed by the rather large, squashed lizard we came across.
Our garden has a nightingale at the moment, which arrived bang on time for Beltaine. It's fantastic hearing it sing at night and it's warm enough to keep the window open to hear it properly. Who could ask for more?
My contributions to May Day have been these little decorated glasses to put the lily of the valley in. I only have one struggling plant in the garden, but my friend kindly brought me some of hers and we worked on the design for the glasses together.
